Useful volunteering begins with a clear match between what a community needs and what a volunteer is able to commit. You do not need to promise every weekend to start a conversation.

Choose a realistic commitment

Think about how often you are available, whether you prefer a regular role or an occasional activity, and how far you are able to travel. Clear availability helps an organization decide whether there is a suitable opportunity.

Describe your skills

Administration, organizing supplies, tutoring experience, event support and professional expertise are examples of skills to discuss. These are possible areas of interest, not a list of current RRB vacancies. Ask which roles are needed now.

Understand the role before starting

Ask about supervision, training, location, age requirements and any screening involved. Work involving children or vulnerable people needs appropriate safeguards. Follow the organization’s process and never assume an informal invitation replaces onboarding.

Respect the people you meet

Ask before taking photographs. Do not share someone’s circumstances or personal story without appropriate permission. Arrive when agreed and let the coordinator know early if your availability changes.

Start a conversation with RRB

Use the Get Involved page to prepare a volunteer inquiry. Include your general interests and availability. The team will need to confirm whether an opportunity is available and what steps apply.
